06-21

Wimbledon is approaching, and we
already have some anticipations. Firstly, the women's doubles draw was released; Martina and Arantxa's first round opponents are Giulia Casoni and Sandra Nacuk. Then, we can read an article reporting Martina's recent assertions about her last Wimbledon final in 1994. The BBC website shows some moments of that match, as well as a report, in the "Classic Matches" section. There is also a nice Martina's profile and the possibility to vote her as your "favourite Wimbledon legend".

06-22 As in 2000, during the two-weeks tournament Martina will work again as tennis analyst for TNT, as well as for the BBC during the women's singles final.
Profile - from the TNT website

06-28 This evening Martina and Arantxa won, employing about fourty minutes to defeat 6-0 6-1 their first round opponents Giulia Casoni and Sandra Nacuck.

06-30 Today Martina won both the two matches she played. Firstly, she and Arantxa defeated Yayuk Basuki and Nana Miyagi 7-5 6-1 in the second round. Then, some hours later, she and Max Mirnyi reached the second round in mixed doubles winning against Mitch Sprengelmeyer and Lilia Osterloh. On Monday, July 2 Martina and Max will face Lisa Raymond e Leander Paes. The match is scheduled fourth on Court # 2.

07-02 Martina and Max lost their second round match to Leander Paes and Lisa Raymond 3-6 4-6; tomorrow Martina and Arantxa will play a tough third round match against Venus and Serena Williams. The match is scheduled fourth on Centre Court.

07-03 Martina and Arantxa reached the quarterfinals without playing their third round match against the Williams sisters, who withdrew from the women's doubles competition because of Serena's health problems. Tomorrow Martina and Arantxa will face Nathalie Tauziat and Kimberly Po-Messerli.

07-04 "Navratilova's dream dies": in this way the Wimbledon official website announced Martina and Arantxa's loss in the quarterfinals, defeated by Nathalie Tauziat and Kimberly Po-Messerli 4-6 6-4 6-4... So Martina's return to Wimbledon for this year is now over; let's hope she will have again the chance in the future to equal Billie Jean King's record of 20 Wimbledon titles, which was a favourite topic discussed by the media during this edition of the Championships ;-)
