Charities
After having founded, many years ago, an own institution which took care of unprivileged children (named "Martina Navratilova Youth Foundation"), Martina gives now her support to several charities and people she happens to meet. Martina explains it deeply in her official website:

Animals
Martina loves animals very much... During her career she used to travel all around the world with her dogs; do you remember little Killer Dog, silent spectator of her trainings and press conferences? Martina has always fought for animal rights, against no-use cruelty of humans, and for environment protection. She supports several important world organisations, giving voice to many of their campaigns, and is vegetarian since 1993.

Women & Sport
As a sport lover, Martina usually helps promoting activities which aim at giving women more familiarity with a constant sports practice. Martina is also a member of the Women's Sports Foundation, created by Billie Jean King in 1974.

Gay rights
Martina found a way to raise money for many important gay organisations, which fight for reaching equal rights and respect in our society and provide services as well as health programms for the entire LGBT community: she launched a credit card called "Rainbow Card"... Details in the official website linked below.

Television
From 1995 to 1999 Martina worked as tennis analyst for HBO, and commentated on Wimbledon with her former colleagues Billie Jean King and Mary Carillo. In 2000 she collaborated with Turner Network Television (TNT) and CNN/Sports Illustrated, while in 2001 she worked again as tennis analyst for TNT, and for the BBC during the women's singles final.

Ice Hockey
In winter Martina used to play for the Women Association of Colorado Hockey's league. Her team, called "Aspen Mother Puckers", won the 1999-2000 league. In 2001 they ended the season as #2 in the WACH standings, behind the "Rocky Mountain Rockets".

Out of Africa
On June 12, 1999 Martina inaugurated an exhibition of photos she had taken during her safaris in Kenya. The "Out of Africa" exhibition was held inside the Adria Palace, a Prague's old building which had recently been renewed... In those days, Martina gave her support to the 3duby project, which aimed at mantaining and preserving the beauty of an ancient historical park, called "Stromovka Park". In that occasion she also played a mixed doubles exhibition match with Jan Kodes and Helena Sukova to raise money for the initiative.

SI Awards
Friday, December 2, 1999 Martina took part in the Sports Illustrated's 20th Century Sports Awards. The gala was held in New York City at Madison Square Garden, where the world of sport met to celebrate the 15 century's greatest athletes. A touching moment occured when Muhammad Ali was elected Sportsman of the Century. Martina figured among the six Individual Sports Women nominees, with Chris Evert and Steffi Graf; the winner in their category was Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Otherwise, Billie Jean King was chosen as one of the seven athletes who "changed the game".

Induction news
Now it's official: Martina has entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame, in the "Recent Player" category. The news was announced on Tuesday, January 25, 2000, in Newport - Rhode Island. The International Tennis Hall of Fame has named 175 people since 1955 among those who gave tennis significant contributions, at any level. An essential condition to be elected is to have stopped playing on the professional tour from five years at least. Other Hall of Famers named on Tuesday are Australian Davis Cup star Malcolm Anderson and Robert Kelleher, now a U.S. District Court judge in California; he was president of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association during the first Open era times. The induction ceremony is scheduled for July, 15 next in Newport.

Testimonial
Martina is featured in a TV commercial. The new Subaru of America advertising began at the end of March on the cable networks ESPN, The Golf Channel and the Outdoor Life Network, and some ads were also shown in some sports magazines and USA Today. Besides Martina, the new 2001MY Subaru Forester was advertised also by two LPGA golfers, Juli Inkster and Meg Mallon, and skier Diann Roffe-Steinrotter. This was called the "What do we know?" campaign; after having extolled the car performance, compared with the athletic one, Martina ended smiling: "But what do we know? We're just girls.'' Martina's only regret is that sponsors never featured her for similar ads when she was a professional player, while she was playing at her highest levels, because of her private life; now, it means that times maybe are changing. In the September issue "Tennis Magazine" talked about Martina's engagement and its significance for women's sports.

Millennium March
On Sunday April, 30 Martina took part in the Millennium March for Equality, the march on the Mall in Washington D.C. where the American gay community met to demonstrate in order to obtain equal civil rights. Like at the previous march, which was in 1993, Martina made a speech.

In the Newport Casino there was even a "Martina's Room", showing some memorabilia from her extraordinary career.

Pam Shriver's election
Last week Pam Shriver and
Mats Wilander were elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. It's sure a satisfaction for Pam to receive this tribute in right and proper recognition of her great career results, many of them achieved together with Martina in women's doubles... The International Tennis Hall of Fame's official website reported a Q&A with Mats and Pam during the announcement; Pam mentioned Martina in several points, talking also about Martina's actual competitiveness in the WTA Tour: "I think my induction is more unique than most people who get into the Hall of Fame. It's obviously very heavily weighted towards doubles and one particular partnership. In fact, I tried to call Martina in the last couple days. She's traveling. I wanted to leave a message and just tell her, "Thanks, because without you I don't think I'd be on this conference call." "What do you think about her [Martina] being able to still compete on the pro level at her age?"
"Well, look, people like Martina Navratilova and her talent come along once or twice every century, I'm convinced. She is exceptional. I mean, obviously I saw it up close playing the deuce side, looking over the ad side, some magic coming from her racquet. Even though she's in her mid 40s and I'm not yet 40, but I will be the week before the induction, so it will be a big month for me in July, Martina can still play doubles at the highest level. I think if she allowed herself to play singles, we'd all be pretty amazed how high she could get to in singles, still. It's too tough on the body. She doesn't want to have that kind of pressure. Mats spoke about the passion for the game. I think a lot of the great champions and a lot of the people, virtually everybody who has ever been inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has that passion for the game."

Physical Activity Day
On Wednesday, May 1 Martina was in Washington D.C. to help the government publicize the release of the "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" study on child obesity. According to the study, "...overweight children are being hospitalized at dramatically rising rates for diabetes, sleep apnea and other diseases that obesity causes or worsens...". Also, "...about 13 percent of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, more than double the number two decades ago. Experts blame... factors that encourage kids to be sedentary". Martina played her part racing through an obstacle course with youngsters to show them that staying fit is fun, and warning them about video games: "You're not going to become Michael Jordan by playing Space Invaders."

On July 13, Martina was present at Pam Shriver's induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.; during the ceremony, she introduced her longtime doubles partner, as we can see in the pictures below... Congratulation, Pam!

Martina & the U.S.A.
On July, 17 Martina was interviewed by CNN anchor Connie Chung during the show "Connie Chung Tonight". The topic were Martina's recent comments on the actual political situation in her adoptive homeland, quoted by German newspaper "Die Zeit". Martina's thoughts, which she expressed with her usual frankness, gave rise to various reactions, some according to her point of view, some not at all. As far as I'm concerned, in those weeks I received a lot of e-mails which proofed the "hornets' nest" Martina stirred up... you can read both Martina's article on "Die Zeit" and the CNN transcript of "Connie Chung Tonight" (Martina's interview is at the middle of the page).

Save the Sheep campaign
Martina's fight for animal rights is hard as usual; she recently wrote to Australian Prime Minister John Howard, asking to stop a sheep farming practice called mulesing. Bratislava exhibit
On June 18 Martina attended Juraj Kralik's exhibit entitled " Art Grandslam" in Bratislava, Slovakia. Here's an extract from SME Bratislava: <<Grand Slam Project fotografa Juraja Králika a slávnej tenistky Martiny Navrátilovej v Múzeu Danubiana v Cunove je multidisciplinárny projekt. Autori kombinujú minimal art s akcnou malbou. Akcným elementom bol tenis hraný na kurte pokrytom zafarbenou látkou a s loptickami namocenými vo farbe. Séria obrazov vznikala in situ na grandslamových tenisových kurtoch v New Yorku, Melbourne, Paríži a Londýne. Kombinácia dvoch odlišných svetov - umenia a športu nie je nic nové - poznali ju už starí Gréci. >>

French Open time
Some facts concerning Martina's presence at Roland Garros... On June 5 she took part at the ITF World Champions Dinner, which was held at the Pavillion d'Armenonville. Justin Henin received the ITF World Women's Champion 2006 award while Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur were given the ITF World Women's Doubles Champions 2006 award. Justin Henin eventually won her fourth French Open title (third in a row) defeating Ana Ivanovic 6-1 6-2. At the end of the match, prior to the beginning of the press conference, Martina gave Justin one of her paintings as 'special gift'. Here's the transcript of Martina's short speech (you can read the full press conference in the second link below): "... As a special gift to you, because apparently, tomorrow the men's champion is getting something special on the court. And we said, "What's the woman's champion getting?" And they said, "Nothing."And I said, "Well, okay. So we'll fix that." And we made a painting on the Center Court on Tuesday, and here it is. There's a little writing, you can read that later. There you go. And this signifies the draw, and all of the matches that you had to play to get to it. This is the final point. And the point is made -- everything is made of seven colors, because there were seven rounds. And this point was made of 120 dots because there were 127 matches played altogether. So congratulations. A little something for you to remember...."

Martina on Martina Hingis doping charges
Martina wrote a column on her personal website to make some reflections about Martina Hingis' recent case; her reasoning is frank and clear, it really helped me to understand something more about this sad story... As many people probably know, on November 1 Martina Hingis called a news conference during which - fighting back tears - she read a statement announcing her retirement from professional tennis and the fact that she had been accused of testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon. She reportedly left the room without taking questions. It seems that her retirement was somehow expected; as regards the accusations of drug-taking, they quickly made Hingis front page news all over the world. Let's hope the accusations will turn out to be groundless, let's hope it, both for Martina Hingis and for women's tennis. Also, I think it's up to the media (and also to websites like mine) to report the future developments of the case, not forgetting to well highlight the possible acquittal; otherwise, people will always remember just this sad chapter of Martina Hingis career.

Martina becomes AARP's new 'Health & Fitness Ambassador'
Martina commited herself to many new interesting issues and projects, as on December 4 she was named 'Health and Fitness Ambassador' by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), a United States-based non-government organization for people age 50 and over, which counts more than 39 million members. AARP's mission is "...dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as we age. We lead positive social change and deliver value to members through information, advocacy and service...", as we can read in the official website. Next year Martina is expected to attend various AARP events, as well as to share her tips and information "...to make it easier to live a healthy life at age 50+...". Martina's tips will be shown inside a specific section of AARP's website, called 'AARP Fitness - Your Destination to Live an Active, Healthier Life'. She already wrote her '10 Holiday Wellness Tips' and a couple of new recipes ('Martina’s Sporty Sprouting Holiday Salad' and 'Martina’s Holiday Berry Parfait', which seem both delicious...); you find them on aarpfitness.com (see link below). Congratulations Martina, you'll do an excellent job, that's for sure!

Chat with fans
The Washington Post official website provided a nice chat with Martina on December 5... Martina's answers were interesting as usual; at the end she thanked the fans and said that she even 'got a couple questions she's never been asked before', which is obviously quite rare!

2008 Hopman Cup
From December 29 to January 4 Martina was at the Hyundai Hopman Cup XX in Perth, Western Australia. She was this year’s VIP guest of the tournament and she also worked as commentator for the Australian channel ABC (she joined Fred Stolle, Louise Pleming, Geoff Masters, Lisa McShea, Steve Robilliard, Peter Wilkins and Quentin Hull). The Hopman Cup is the official mixed teams competition of the International Tennis Federation and is considered the most prestigious invitation tennis tournament in the world. A men’s and a women’s representative are invited to represent their country and eight are the countries which compete: Serbia (Jelena Jankovic and Novak Djokovic), USA (Serena Williams and Mardy Fish), Czech Republic (Lucie Safarova and Tomas Berdych), France (Tatiana Golovin and Arnaud Clement), Argentina (Gisela Dulko and Juan Ignacio Chela), Australia (Alicia Molik and Peter Luczak), India (Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna) and Chinese Taipei (Su-Wei Hsieh and Yen-Hsun Lu).
On December 31 she attended the opening of her tennis art exhibition 'Art Grand Slam'. The paintings, created by Martina and Juraj Kralik, will be displayed in the foyer of the InterContinental Perth Burswood (a luxurious hotel located near the center of the city) and in a gallery at Leederville (a suburb 3 kilometres northwest of the Central Business District of Perth) for several weeks... Martina talked about 'Art Grand Slam' and the future developments, as you can read in the second article here below. She also took part in the New Years Eve ball aboard the 'Hopman Princess'... After the dinner (according to ABC blogger Carole Kerr the menu was "...a choice of waygu beef, salmon sashimi or szechwan soup for starters, barramundi or lamb for mains and the all important dessert - a 'caribbean inspiration' of coconut and rum mousse, nougatine sponge, soft centre passionfruit and mango served with cocoa and chilli sorbet") there was a charity auction (also including "...a Martina Navratilova and Juraj Kralik original artwork...") to raise money for 'Variety Club' and the 'Kids Tennis Foundation'.

Australian Open commentary
Martina did some excellent commentary at the Australian Open for the American cable TV Tennis Channel. The network's official website still provides a short video of outakes: they are absolutely funny!!

Opening of 'The Els Club' in Dubai
On January 28 Martina was in the United Arab Emirates to attend the opening day of Els Course at Dubai Sports City. It's a 72-par, 18-hole championship golf course designed by South African star Ernie Els and it's the newest jewel at Dubai Sports City, which is known as "...the world's first purpose-built sports city...". Martina and her fellow guests (former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel of Denmark, cricketer Andrew Flintoff of England and former captain of the World Champion South African rugby team John Smit) hit some shots and had a launch 'on the slopes', as you can see in the links below.

Martina announces her regained Czech citizenship
She made the announcement on March 11 during a press conference in Tokyo, where she was preparing herself for the Dream Match against Steffi Graf (see tennis news page). Martina pointed out that there are no political reasons behind her desire to regain her native country citizenship (which she lost in 1975 after her defection), nor has she ever thought to to give up her American citizenship... She will simply mantain a dual citizenship, as many people do around the world. Nevertheless, many Americans feel some resentment and think that Martina applied for Czech citizenship just because she doesn't agree with the actual political administration in the U.S.

Martina's excellent reply to polemics
Many polemics followed the news that she has regained her Czech citizenship two months ago, especially in the U.S. That's why Martina wrote a post as blogger on the internet newspaper 'The Huffington Post', as well as on her website. It's an interesting reading, and I also like the numerous comments, which give an idea of how many Americans support Martina!

Martina and Chris on Oprah Winfrey Show
On April 8 U.S. residents had the chance to watch Martina and Chris Evert talking about their rivalry and remembering facts and anecdotes behind their epic duels! They were guests on Oprah Winfrey's famous talk show, and Oprah's official website provides some excerpts of the interview, as well as some nice pictures.

Opening of the Sports Museum of America (SmA)
Martina and thirty other hall of fame athletes attended the special pre-opening event hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on May 6, to celebrate the opening of the Sports Museum of America (SmA), scheduled on May 7; she's also a founding member of the museum's Honorary Board of Trustees. This innovative museum is located in New York, at 26 Broadway, "... in the heart of the new downtown", as we can read in the official website (it's footsteps from the Statue of Liberty Ferry, near Wall Street and the former site of the World Trade Center). It's defined as "...the nation's first and only all sports experience", and indeed it's the only multi-media museum experience dedicated to the celebration of all sports. You'll find more than 30 interactive and touch screens, original films, equipment and memorabilia, 19 themed galleries and state-of-the-art interactive technology everywhere. All major sports are represented: auto racing, baseball, basketball, bicycling, bowling, boxing, figure skating, fishing, football, golf, hockey, horse racing, lacrosse, rugby, sailing, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field, volleyball, wrestling... SmA is also the permanent home of the Women's Sports Foundation International Women's Sports Hall of Fame, within the Billie Jean King International Women's Sports Center. Martina attended the opening night gala as well.

International Women's Sports Hall of Fame inaugural induction ceremony
In its 28th year, the annual induction ceremony for the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame finally has a "...place to call home". This proud announcement can be read inside the WSF official website... The event took place for the first time in the brand-new Billie Jean King Women's Sports Center, which is part of the Sports Museum of America (inaugurated one month ago, see article here below). All the memorabilia gathered over the past two decades have now a permanent home: the first museum dedicated to women's sports. 2008 inductees were: Algerian track star Hassiba Boulmerka, UCLA softball coach Sue Enquist, Japanese golfer Hisako Higuchi and Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller. Martina and many other previously inducted member of the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame were honored on stage. She later presented inductee Hassiba Boulmerka with her award.

Laureus summer events and interviews
During Wimbledon, London hosts a couple of events organized by the Laureus World Sports Academy: the IWC Laureus Polo Cup, held at Ham Polo Club, that raises funds to support the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Argentina (June 22), and the Laureus Annual Summer celebrations (June 28), which this year took place at the All England Championships. Martina attended both the events and also welcomed the guests at her Art Grand Slam exhibition, together with Juraj Kralik. On June 24 she did a very interesting interview on Laureus TV, talking about different subjects (Wimbledon, eastern european players, Laureus and her art); the Laureus website shows some videos as well as the complete transcript. Talking about interviews, some days before the beginning of Wimbledon, on June 14, Martina had a great interview with Ed Pilkington of The Guardian, don't miss it!
